8 Tips for Attending Sporting Events & Avoiding Coronavirus

The rapidly spreading COVID-19 strain of the coronavirus has already claimed more than 3,000 lives and infected 100,00 people across the globe as countries scramble to contain a fast-moving infection. While airlines, stock indexes, travel destinations and even the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo are facing potentially disastrous impacts due to anxiety about the virus, the live music business is grappling with how to tackle an invisible enemy whose method of transmission could seriously impact bottom lines.

In the past week alone, promoters have canceled Ultra Music festivals in Miami and Abu Dhabi and Tomorrowland in France; Apple, Netflix and other big brands have pulled out of South by Southwest; and dozens of shows across the planet have been canceled or postponed out of an abundance of caution, even as many more have gone on as scheduled. Is the reaction too much too soon, or is it the right move at a time when experts predict a potential vaccine is up to a year away?

TV's Dr. Mehmet Oz and two event safety experts share the following 8 tips for how fans can keep themselves safe if they're going out to a sporting event during this fraught era and what the industry's plans are to mitigate fear and maximize security.
  1. Relax and do the things you would normally do to keep yourself disease-free.
  2. Wash your hands thoroughly for 20 second or more (long enough to sing "Happy Birthday" twice)
  3. Make generous use of the alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  4. When you sneeze or cough do it into your arm, not your hands.
  5. Avoid high-fiving, handshaking and other direct-contact hand-to-hand greetings
  6. If you see someone who is hocking up a lung, move away.
  7. Leave the masks to professionals
  8. Keep people at an arms distance away
